MISSION STATEMENT
The Capistrano Valley High School Foundation provides financial support for projects and facilities, answering the challenge of reduced public school funding. Working with past, present and future students and their families, local businesses and the community, the Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all CVHS students.
The CVHS Foundation is a not-for-profit organization staffed by committed volunteers to help bridge the gap between what our school has and what it needs.

Jane Lehmann Shafron
Jane Lehmann Shafron was born in Canberra, Australia and moved to the United States in 1999 with her husband and three children. Jane graduated from the Australian National University in Canberra with a Bachelor of Arts degree and the University of Sydney with a Bachelor and Masters degrees in Law. Jane practiced corporate law in Australia before moving to the United States in 1999. She now runs her own business, Your Story Here Video Biography, helping families preserve the personal legacy of their loved ones for future generations. Jane is a Director of the Association of Personal Historians and is an Ambassador with the National Association of Women Business Owners, Orange County. She helped establish the David P. Campbell Foundation for Pediatric Mitochondrial Disease Research. Jane has been an actively involved at her children's schools, Castille Elementary, Newhart Middle School and CVHS.
Secretary- Carolyn Hwang
Carolyn has lived in Mission Viejo since 2000. Two of her children graduated from Capo Valley High School and her third child will be a freshman at Capo Valley in the fall of 2012. She has served on the executive boards of Reilly Foundation, Reilly PTA, Newhart PTA, Capo Valley PTSA, and CVHS Foundation in various capacities, including Executive Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. In addition Carolyn was a founding member of the Executive Board of the CVHS Girls Volleyball Boosters, Inc. She has a B.S. in Accounting from Western New England University and an MBA from the University of Connecticut, and formerly worked as a CPA as well as Director of Group Pensions for a large financial services company.
Treasurer- Scott Whelchel
Scott started working for AT&T while attending college to become a Fire Fighter. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree Scott decided to stay with AT&T and spent 31 years with the phone company, retiring at the end of 2009. Scott started out as a telephone installer while attending college and retired as a General Manager. During Scott’s career he worked in Operations, Sales, Marketing, Consumer Business Offices and finally retired in Sales Operations. After retiring from AT&T, Scott founded the Peak Client Group in 2010 and now has offices in 11 cities around the country. Peak Client Group is a proposal development company and supports Fortune 100 clients as well as federal, state and local government agencies. Scott has an MBA from Pepperdine University and a BA in Marketing from California University, Fullerton. Scott also obtained a Certificate in Management from the University of Southern California. A native Californian, Scott is married with three grown children. Scott has been involved in a number of charity organizations throughout the years and still sits on three boards and is a recently appointed Commissioner for the city of Mission Viejo.

Doug Boyd
Doug currently serves as the Executive Pastor of Mission Hills Church located in Mission Viejo. One of Doug’s roles as the Executive Pastor is to seek-out partnership opportunities with community organizations within the city of Mission Viejo. The purpose of these partnerships is to allow the church to use its wide-ranging resources in order to make an impact in our local community. Being able to partner with the Capo Valley High School Foundation has allowed church parishioners, many of which are alumni, to give back to the school through fundraising and campus beautification efforts. Besides being a pastor and a member of the CVHS Foundation Board, Doug also enjoys coaching, working at his daughter’s school and spending quality time with his wife and 3 daughters. Family hobbies include days at the beach, hiking, biking and lounging at the community pool. Doug has a B.S. in Marketing from BIOLA University.
Sharon O'Brien
Sharon has lived in Mission Viejo 8 of the last 10 years and she has 2 children in the CUSD schools. She has served on executive boards, chaired fundraisers and volunteered in sports booster programs at Castille Elementary, Newhart Middle and Capo Valley High School. Sharon worked in consumer goods Advertising and as a soft drinks Brand Management executive for 12 years and has lived in several midwest and east coast cities. She currently manages vacation rentals through her marketing company, Celtic Partners, and actively volunteers at the high school. Sharon has a BA in psychology from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Sharon Campbell
Brian Skalsky
Brian is a 2001 Alumni from Capistrano Valley High School. He received his B.S. in Biology from the University of California Irvine in 2005 and is receiving his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in the spring of 2011. Upon Graduation he will be sitting for the California Bar Exam and will be subsequently employed with Bremer, Whtye, Brown, & O'Meara, a Law Firm in Newport Beach. Brian is currently serving his third term on the City of Mission Viejo's Community Services Commission. Brian is enthusiastically looking forward to giving back to his alma mater.
LaVal Brewer
LaVal is President LaVal Brewer Consulting a consulting practice that works with nonprofits to help them meet their mission. LaVal is of proven nonprofit executive experienced in operations and revenue development. He is focused on helping nonprofits, schools and religious organizations engage and involve participants of their local community. LaVal has had a 21-year career within YMCA operations and development. LaVal’s experiences in day-to-day operations give him a unique prospective on the challenges small and medium non-profits face everyday. He has held various management positions such as Youth and Family Programs Director, Operations Director, chief table mover and Executive Director. LaVal’s understanding of nonprofit operations, program and revenue development, fundraising, volunteer development and community engagement help make him a natural connector and relationship builder.

CVHS Principal, Dr. Kevin Astor
Kevin Astor is very proud to be returning to high school for his first year as principal of Capo Valley High School. After serving in both junior and senior high schools, Kevin is excited to be back among the energy and activity and is honored to be a part of the Cougar team. After graduating from Boston University, Kevin returned to Southern California to begin his teaching career. He has spent the past 18 years as a Spanish teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Anaheim Union High School District. Kevin earned his doctorate from USC in educational leadership in 2005. Kevin and his wife Diane are raising four kids ages five months, two years, four years and six years – Peter, Lucy, Ben and Sam, in order. Besides trying to contain an extremely active household, Kevin is very involved with his church and enjoys tennis, reading and USC football.
CVHS PTSA President, Barbara Arthur
Barbara is the current PTSA President for Capo Valley High School. Barbara and her family have lived in Mission Viejo since 1997. She has been married for 20 years and has three daughters with two attending CVHS. Barbara has been on the Executive Board at Castille Elementary School and has been involved with PTA at Newhart Middle school. She was President of the Mom's Club as well as a Girl Scout leader for 11 years. Before starting her family she worked in the construction field for 13 years and currently helps her husband run their small business. She is an avid runner and enjoys training for and running in marathons.
